Our southern skies are one of the things that keeps bringing northern astronomers south and staying here. (That and the wonderfully friendly people
) The skies are pretty awesome with most of the country not affected by light polution. How unpolluted? I recently did a 30min exposure and could have gone on for another 20-30 min without the image being excessively polluted. Unfortunately my guidescope was slipping during the image so it was not good.
