I think so Erick, although I've only just started to play around with it (photo of set-up att). On eclipse night, I was shooting in small image size (1936x1288 pixels) with the 400D.
I've attached an actual size crop of one image in the sequence to show you what it will do (don't forget to click the image for full size). Mind you, I don't think large image size (3888x2592) would add significantly to the detail, and focus is quite hard to get when the rotten flimsy tripod wobbles everywhere!
Long exposures are out - all my totality shots were blurred.
