Yes, Andrew, spectacular indeed. I had similar experience at my location at Hall (Canberra). At totality I could see a bright Milky Way sweeping across the sky from the treetops in the north to the treetops in the south. A bit special. I was tempted for a second to switch from planetary to Deep Sky. This is how the moon should always be.
