Do you have an alternate computer to try the camera on? This would eliminate the possibility of a defective camera or cable causing the crash.

I have seen defective USB cables that intermittently short the +5 volt line during the physical disconnection and cause the computer to reboot. Seems to often happen when I have disconnected the cable. Also, on some cases the front side USB connectors are sort of dodgey and they short against the case easily when disconnecting and will cause the computer to do strange things.

And make sure you go to the task bar and double click on the USB icon and select the device you wish to remove before pulling the USB connection.
