The absolute most important thing you need to do is to ensure that the base is level.
Spreading the legs evenly is not the same thing as having the base level.
If the base is not level, you end up putting stress on the centre bolt and it will feel hard to turn and can cross thread.

I usually spread out the tripod legs and put a circular spirit bubble on the base. Then lock the legs in at their respective heights making sure the base is still level and then proceed to thread up the scope.
