Nice work Ken, you're on your way. It looks like you got some reflections from the lights on the camera in the second shot.. you could try taping over the lights.
What settings are adjustable on the camera? ISO? Shutter speed? Focal ratio? Exposure compensation?
Did you handhold the shot? I'm sure with your DIY skills you'll be able to make yourself an adapter no problems.
