In reference to "chat rooms", as such, agreed Arthur - to an extent. The problem that I see is that most young people that I know hang around in these rooms for a good portion of their day, and over time think that it's acceptable to take the same language out into the real world. I can't remember how many young people I've had to refuse work to because they thought it was OK to spell however they felt like spelling something. It's not only spelling, but grammar and punctuation that matter in the professional written world too. The way people conduct themselves on these forums is a huge influence on education IMHO. All I can tell a failed applicant is that they're not "actually worth anything" to me and my business if they don't think language is important. Some can't believe that I refuse them on that basis. Technically I don't have to tell them why I don't want them, but some may actually learn something useful by knowing.
