I agree with Jase, a wedge will yield great benefits compared to the current set up.
I know the feeling regarding day job and this hobby, last night was beautiful but i couldnt stay up until 4! Should have though, given tonight's cloud cover around here.
You'll find that you can make some adjustments in DSS, sliding the bell curve of the RGB image left and right (i usually link all three colors together), adjusting saturation (I usually add a bit to my images ) etc. There are better and more detailled instructions elsewhere including as part of the support forum for DSS.
I'd suggest you have a go at running the first image through Noiseware. Even on the default settings you'll find it yields a great image...might just be my personal tastes though but i think it's worth a try.
