I checked an Orion 12.5mm and the illuminator does take 3 of the thin Silver Oxide batteries. Look for the following codes: SR54/RW49/AG10/G10/SG10 or 554.
As an emergency replacement the 2x LR44 batteries will work but the LED is a little dimmer running off 3V rather than 4.5V.
