With my laptop (IBM Thinkpad). I right click on the desktop and select Properties.
In there , I can select the Settings tab to get at the dual screen.
There is an advanced button that brings up the options supported by the graphics controller (in my case an ATI adaptor). This allows me to select either the laptop or the external display as the active device.
