That's a very hard question, Glen. I love them all, for different reasons. I chose open clusters because of their instant visual beauty and extraordinary variation, whether by naked eye (such as Pleiades and Hyades), as a bino object (many of the Collinders), or through a scope (eg the amazing OC's in Puppis). Open clusters are accessable at any time of the month through any sized scope. They are wonderfully available, and often display beautiful colour variation.
Some of the other targets I love for the concept, especially galaxies, galaxy clusters, globs and planetaries. But let's face it, many look very similar, and can be very disappointing in a small aperture scope or under light polluted skies.
