It's comical and I shouldn't laugh and it does illustrate they are still human beings. It is sad and tragic, given the mental , physical and academic skills that one must possess to make it to the space program, and then in one short moment of madness throw it all away. Its sad for her children too.
I doubt very much NASA would re-instate her in the program. The risk would be too high, regardless of how much psycho-analysis, treatment she untertakes and not to mention possible jail time.
The only way I could see her re-instated is NASA ascertaining how much money they have spent on her and the skills she may have and think it was too much to throw away. That said, I'd doubt there be difficulties filling the vacancy with a rookie.
