Officially, scientists estimate that the mammoth died out around 10,000 years ago, but I have read a discussion paper which suggested that they were still around as early as 5000 years ago in the then remote and unexplored areas of the arctic circle.
The age was as a result of dating cave paintings and was unsubstantiated but it does seem plausible.
It would be nice to see them roaming the earth again, they looked like a very majestic animal
