I lived in Campbelltown and Penrith, both on the outskirts of Sydney and I never saw the Milky way. Once I was at a Cadet camp in Parramatta and the night sky was reddish and only a few 1st and 2nd magnitude stars were visable.

i live in campbelltown now... maybe it has improved cause i can see the milky way on a new moon quite easy
as well as the smc and lmc on a good night.
