QSI 6162 Mono CCD Camera – Award-Winning Workhorse

Selling my QSI 6162-wsg8 monochrome CCD camera, featuring the KAF-16200 sensor and an 8-position built-in filter wheel that accepts 2" mounted filters. I won this in a QSI competition back in 2020, and it's produced numerous award-winning images, but having transitioned to a CMOS-based system, it's time to pass it on.

I’ll be upfront: this has been a quirky unit at times, best suited to someone with a bit of patience and some technical know-how. I used it in recent years with Voyager, which managed the occasional handshake hiccup better than Stellarmate (I haven't tried it with Nina). This issue only occurs occasionally, and only when the ambient temp drops below below 8 °C.

A photo of the unit shows my feeler gauge setup, used to fine-tune sensor tilt and maintain a flat field. (an idea I learned here on IIS).

Key Specs:

Sensor: Kodak KAF-16200 Mono CCD (Class 2)

Resolution: 16.3MP (4556 x 3640)

Sensor Size: 27.2mm x 21.8mm (APS-H)

Pixel Size: 6µm

Cooling: Dual-stage TEC, typically -30°C to -40°C below ambient

Integrated 7-position filter wheel (fits 2" mounted filters) Filters not included

Mechanical shutter

Integrated OAG port

Includes padded case.

Despite its quirks, this camera has produced some of my most successful and widely published work:

AstroBin Image of the Day, 16 x Top Picks

2024 Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year – Shortlisted
2023 Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year – Shortlisted

2022 Australian Photographic Prize – Winner, Nature Category

2021 Save A Star Astro2021 Competition – Grand Prize Winner (Astronomy)

2021 CWAS David Malin Awards – Highly Commended

With deep wells, low noise, and smooth CCD tonal quality, this is still a capable and powerful imaging platform in the right hands.

Considering it’s age, I’m open to all offers.
Pickup available in Melbourne, or I can ship at the buyer’s expense.

Happy to answer questions or send sample images.

Clear skies,
Andy
