Good morning Mike!

I just saw your reply last night! Thanks so much for offering to assist. I'll send you a PM shortly.

After much consideration, I've decided that I too will be moving forward with the 1.8m x 2.4m plan as anything larger will simply take too much room.

The garage door tracks used in Skyshed's plans are indeed a pain to source. I am yet to find anything out there, so I'm likely to follow your lead here and move toward the v-groove/flat roller solution. With this however, my understanding is that the beams supporting the roof (when open), have a small tilt, to ensure heavy rain doesn't find a way into the observatory via the roof tracks.

Have you decided how to build the pier yet?

Closing, regarding the automation - have you thought of Arduino? There are plenty of projects with source code you can easily reuse to make this happen. I'm certainly considering it, but holding off until I get the main parts of the observatory built!

Many thanks!
