You have Canon gear, it's much better to focus in the dark with live view than my Nikon D810 which is absolutely useless for live view. It's nothing but noise and I've oft read the same comment from other owners, it's a pity.
I have this probably stupid philosophy, if I can purchase a lens cheap enough to be prepared to throw it out if I ruin it I will (and have) strip it down to repair it whether electronics or mould on glass, front and/or rear elements. I won't touch middle elements, I'm not totally stupid.
I have picked up some very nice lenses quite cheap because of the faults and recovered them.
One was a zoom mechanism locking up, it was as simple as removing the rubber ring and screwing the screw the slot runs on back in except I removed the screw and put thread lock on so it won't happen again.
If I lose $50 I can wear that, not much more on a pension but despite what I may claim I'm far from a total idiot when it comes to disassembling absolutely anything and fixing the faults/reassembling the things, my son is the same..
