Hi Leo,
You are only 150km east of me and we are the same latitude. The red aurora is 200-400km high and thousands of km south of us. Lot's of great photos of the aurora taken even further east in the Blue Mountains, central and south coast etc etc. Most likely, you missed the flare up - 8:15pm-9:30pm when it was naked eye visible with colour. It spent a long time visible with night vision in monochrome. Pretty faint other times. I was on aurora watch from 6:15pm-11:15pm.

I don't have a clear view remotely south, I can see the southern cross but that's about it.
Had I known and gone up to a local lookout I may have seen it. Lithgow itself is in a basin surrounded by mountains on most sides.
I was out playing with a camera and 28mm f2.8 lens from 8:15 till 1AM approximately (and couldn't get focus).
