After a lot of research (including watching a full disassembly video I found on yoo-doit (youtube) it seems there's a flexible circuit board behind the little aperture lever on the lens mount which must be damaged/worn.
I've contacted Nikon, they have suggested this may be the fault and suggested using AF-S lenses.
UHM, NO. I'd be replacing a 30 year collection of lenses from my old film camera days, some of which were very expensive when I worked and could afford such trinkets, off to Nikon repair centre in Sydney it is.
After watching the disassembly video I decided I could probably do the repair but exactly where I'd get the necessary part and how do I run yoo-idiot video in reverse to put it back together?

The white strip is an inductance magnetic stripe control unit, I love my D810 and am a little lost because its not functioning even if I rarely use it with poor health of late.

The part is quite cheap, likely non genuine but after watching the disassembly video I'm not prepared to effect the repair myself especially with migraine induced blurry eyesight most days. I'll leave it to Nikon and get the warranty me thinks.
