An IR cut filter is used in astrophotography to reduce star bloat which is nasty - you might see it in beginnners pics. Big fat blobby stars. It can eliminate IR getting through to the camera sensor.
An IR pass filter ... something less than IR cut I suppose. I suppose it allows some part of the IR wavelength through to the sensor. It might be useful to allow a small amount onto the sensor if it doesnt cause bloat. Some modern CMOS sensors are sensitive to IR and UV light so they may produce pics that include these parts of the spectrum but I havent seen any such resultant pics.
The filters labelled quad band may have this property. Lots of filters get rid of UV but when they do this they seem to get rid of the blue light too and thats not so good.
