Years ago our family had a pet tortoise called "Araldite". We saw him get hit by a car that swerved to hit him on purpose. We found him all broken up by the side of the road - a bloody mess indeed - and took him home with us. We clamped his lower shell (which was still OK) in a vice and my older brother (who had just started studying medicine) fixed him all up with anti-biotics and an inert wrapping of some sort. We were constructing kayaks at the time so we gave him a new shell of green and red fibreglass and this is where his name came from. The new shell kept his own shell together until it healed underneath. We then removed the outer one once he was all OK again.
Anyway... we built a pond for him and he loved it. One day he slipped under the fence and went next missing. We were frantic. After much door-knocking we found that he had gone next door to visit an old Scottish couple who loved him straight away. We gave them little Araldite as they had no other pets.
He went wandering again several months later, and we found him upside down in the creek at the back of our place with his eyes pecked out by a bird. That was a very sad day in my young life.
I hope you find Brett OK.
