I use compartmentalisation.
I have a private email address and a couple of public ones. The public ones are with hotmail and gmail, both of whom have pretty good spam filters. Not much spam gets through but some of my messages, mainly from mailing lists, get junked. Public addresses are used for mailing lists, account registrations etc.
Then I have a private address that only is given to lets say, real life friends and used for secure registrations - banking, tax, my gov etc. When I receive anything about banking medicare ATO at my public address, I don't even have to think about whether it is or isn't a scam.
That email address has no public listing, is never used for registrations. Only for personal correspondence and secure registrations. It has no filters and gets no junk or spam.
