I assume they are using Tomography to do this. I recall doing that at Uni it was fun. Our lecturer gave us a 1d array of data slice, that we used to create a 2d image using Matlab. Basically its how xray's work, you use a point source and measure the amount radiated through the object. This gives you a 1d slice of data which you can use to calculate the other data slices for the remaining 360degrees, together this forms a 2d image. You can use similar process by capturing data in 2d to create a 3d image.
