i thought i responded to this yesterday but obviously I didn't.
My understanding that CS6 is the last Photoshop Version that didn't require subscriptions. in my view gimp is an ok replacement - particularly if you are undertaking minor processing / touchups. however, gimp users are really waiting on v3.02 to come out with its non-destructive layers (nearly there.....) unfortunately it has taken a long time to port the program to gtk3 (under the hood improvements). May be worth waiting a bit longer before passing judgement. of course it is free so you can try it and see if it will meet your needs or not without wasting any $$. of course you will likely want to add a few plugins
