Ihle’s Globular Cluster

The first two globular clusters were found by Ihle and Halley.

Johann Abraham Ihle (1627-1699?) found M22 near Saturn (1.6 deg away) on 26 Aug 1665 from Germany. He described it as “composite nebula between the head and the bow of the archer (Sagittarius) onto which a great number of faint stars are projected “

M22 (NGC 6656) is magnitude 5.1, 32’ in diameter, about 100 light years across and only 10,600 light years away. It is the equal 2nd brightest GC in the sky. 47 Tuc is the brightest.

Edmond Halley (1656-1742) found omega Centauri (NGC 5139) 12 years later in 1677 from St Helena Island.

The image of M22 below was taken using a remote telescope in Chile by Dan Crowson
