Incredibly sad news but also not surprising. He had been battling for a long time. Though I only knew him via IIS I feel a real sense of loss. I remember years ago expressing confidence that he would fulfil his dream of sailing solo around the world. He was already ailing but I felt that his positive attitude would see him succeed. That didn't happen but he never lost that 'I can do this' attitude that made him so inspiring.
When the great cricket commentator Allan McIlvrey passed away he was honoured with the song 'The game is not the same without McIlvrey.' I'm not about to burst into song but IIS will not be the same without Alex. He was a great person and I'll miss him.
