There are many factors that of course could contribute to a lack of communication / non-functionality of the mount, BUT: Provided the cable is of an appropriate impedance and doesn't include any active electronics, such as in the diagram in the article I posted, pin to pin continuity testing, tests the cable functionality completely, but to be even more thorough could include a wiggle /squeeze on the cable whilst testing to check for any internal breaks perhaps.

Beyond the cable of course there may be other issues at the mating connectors and beyond, both hardware/firmware and software related.
