Back when I was a young fellow, I built a 2 metre Heathkit amateur radio transceiver. Mostly all I ever got from it was static, probably because I had no antennae. But still it was rewarding. I went on to a career in an electronics related field, telecommunications, microwave systems, and encrypted networking for banks. Still the old Heathkit rig kicked it all off.
