What model is the printer?
There are generic cartridges which seem to work but Epson (and other manufacturers) have rigged machines so colour balance is right off if non genuine cartridges are detected.
A chip resetter (if the ink cartridge has a chip on the end (sorry, little IC)) and refilling the cartridges yourself with any of the known generic ink brands may be the best option.
Depending on the printer it may be cheaper to replace it with something newer. Be wary of the fact these $79 printer deals you often see at Aus Post and other places, they come with less than 1/3 cartridge capacity of ink so you'll soon be up for new cartridges which again, become expensive.
One caveat, if the printer has been sitting not used for some time the chances are the print nozzles are blocked. It's common with ink jet printers. Some people state leaving the unit powered on for 24 hours will usually clear this issue but I have printers here I've left powered on for weeks on end and the ink nozzles are still blocked (and that's a relatively new HP ink jet I only used to print a few photos for advertising on the local notice board)
