Paul, that's bad luck having a tree obscuring your northern view. Just cut it down and all your frustrations will end!
Shots of M31 pop up in the forum quite often now as more members realise that with a good clear view of a northerly horizon it is definitely a getable target from Australia. I've captured it from a location close to Melbourne, so anywhere north of that is of course, very achievable .
