Hi Grant

Like Steve Said, it depends on what you most interested in to start with and what you want to learn about first and what equipment you may be using. For an introduction to astronomy , Steve Masseys' Atlas Of The Southern Night sky is fairly comprehensive and The Backyard Astronomers Guide by Terence Dickinson and Alan Dyer is another that is always recommended.
Can't go wrong with either book IMHO , Masseys book obviously has an emphasis on the southern half of the sky .
