Issue with new HDD

Hi guys,

After having a problem with my WD external 2TB HDD (started to die basically), I bought this 3TB WD HDD.

First, I tried to connect it via external USB interface from old (faulty) external WD drive.
It reported un-allocated space of 2TB (the same as it had with faulty HDD), so I suspect interface is hard-wired (? or not) for that max capacity.

Then, to try to confirm the above, I connected it with interface similar or the same to this one below:

Storage manager now reported 750GB of un-allocated space (which told me this interface is possibly hard-wired for even smaller size HDD (it is pretty old BTW, ~10 years? or so).
I am not sure now what is happening here..

I wander, should I simply connect that 3TB drive as internal and proceed with allocation (and probably formatting etc.)?
This is not the preferred solution, because it will be harder to back up all the files from other HDD's

Or, should I first allocate 2TB, and then extend the volume size to 3TB when HDD is connected as internal drive (provided this is possible)?

TIA for your help!
