I think the danger of the VA belt is overestimated. The average doses for the crews (they all wore dosimeters) on each Apollo mission are in the attachment. For comparison, the average radiation dosage for a full body medical CT scan is around 1 rad, only one flight, Apollo 14 exceeded that.
