I saw and read the article too and even remarked to my daughter about the misleading information they were disseminating. They did have a short clause near the end of the article saying that , if the eclipse glasses are damaged, they could be dangerous to use , this should have been at the start of the article.
Quoting numbers that had presented to hospitals with eye problems after previous solar eclipses doesn't mean observing the eclipse with the glasses is dangerous, it may mean that those people were not using suitably filtered glasses or other suitably filtered equipment.
I still have the eclipse glasses my kids used for the Ceduna Eclipse in 2002 and they are still safe to use, no pin holes or scratches in the filter material, am saving them for the 2028 event.
