Thanks for the suggestion John. I wasn't using a laptop when trying to locate ngc 1566 with the mirror lens, just a DSLR, so I would have had to download my shots to a computer and convert them to fits files to view it in ASTAP. I worked out which galaxy I had shot by viewing one of many widefield photos of Alpha Doradus available from the Net. Definitely ASTAP sounds like a nice program to plate solve though.
