As for using the Description field to record basic details, I do see a lot of Astrobin posts that do just that. The first page that opens when you upload a new image gives the opportunity to enter text into the Description field. If the image has already been posted you can edit the Description field by clicking on the “Edit” drop down menu and selecting “Basic Information”.
