Meanwhile in France, construction of ITER, the world's largest tokamak
experimental fusion reactor, continues.
A tokamak is a device that uses a magnetic field to confine plasma in the
shape of a torus. It is the most commonly used device for fusion research,
and is the basis for the international ITER project. The word "tokamak" is a
Russian acronym, derived from the words "teplo-kamera magneeticheskaja s katushkami",
which mean "toroidal magnetic chamber with coils".
In a tokamak, a plasma is created by heating a mixture of deuterium and tritium,
two isotopes of hydrogen, to extremely high temperatures. The plasma is then
confined by the magnetic field and compressed, which causes the hydrogen
atoms to fuse together and release a large amount of energy. This energy can
then be used to generate electricity.
