Trev,
I used two beams joined and supported by mid span post.
Don’t be too concerned about the space to secure the rails but do pay attention to keeping both sides as parallel as possible. This makes it all come together without any haste. I used open angled gal steel rails which allows for the rollers to shuffle around without jamming up. Also the seasons will cause movement of using timber but again as long as you allow for enough tolerance it will work fine.
I allowed for 8mm sideways movement in both rails and it works perfectly.
Cheers
Anthony
