Alex,
Hope to get down South soon , definitely after Xmas, New year and January
I noticed you asked about how to reduce stars
Easy in Startools
Later on in your workflow either before colour or after just use “Shrink”

Procedure
Select Mask at top > Auto > adjust Filter Sensitivity to 1 > press Do
Then press Grow at top once , one click then Keep
Select “Shrink” then select “Keep Mask as is”
Make sure Mode is in “Tighten”
Bump up Iterations from default 10 to say 12 or 14
Stars should greatly reduce , adjust Iterations as necessary
If you have stars with big halos , increase Halo Extend to 3 to 5 pixels , increase Un glow Strength to 20% , increase Un Glow Kernel to 5 pixels
If your all your Stars are bloated or big you may have to Grow the Mask bigger to cover them , so Select Mask at top again , click on Grow once more again and press Keep
Then adjust Iterations again and the other parameters at the bottom again

Alternatively try Mode “Dim” but I find “Tighten” works best

When happy with result press Keep , then go into Mask at top again and select Clear then Keep again.

Shrink works absolutely unbelievable for my data sets

See how you go , hopefully Shrink works for you

Best
Martin
