Agree with Andrew, it's all about the framing. I used to take lightning shots with a Canon 30D and 17-40mm (equivalent to 27-64mm). When storms are off in the distance it's good to be able to zoom in a bit but when the storm is getting closer you probably need a wider angle. I reckon most of my shots were at the 17mm (27mm equivalent) setting.
