I hate to be the misery-guts who ruins the day...
I will wager the photo was taken with a long telephoto lens that's been zoomed a long way in. Doing so has the effect of flattening the foreground and background together.
Still a cool photo, though, and one that requires a lot of prep-work to get right. So kudos to the photographer.
