Hi Alex,
I'm assuming that your camera body is a Nikon? What model is it?
If there is a switch on the lens body, you can disable the auto-focus there. If not, there may be a switch on the body of the camera. (Although my very brief search showed that some low-end Nikon DSLR bodies may not have a physical switch to disable autofocus.)
The attached image shows both lens and camera focus on/off switches.
