Have you tried hitting the 'reset' button on the ac unit itself?
Not on the remote but, if you lift the front panel on the wall unit (inside the house) you should find a reset button, worth a try..
Also worth trying is the on/off button on the unit itself; it's still possible that your remote is not actually working despite appearances
