I was at the premier of the 1984 movie - but was slightly concerned when the ushers were handing out synopsis sheet to us all pre movie!
(Many followers sadly know that due to the producers insistence on a 2hr 13 min release, over 7 hrs of David Lynch's movie ended up on the cutting room floor!)

Anyone keen to see the best available recut of this film should view the 3hr Spicediver edit on youtube.

So I attended the latest version with high hopes, also being a huge fan on Denis Villeneuve's work on Arrival and Blade Runner 2049.

Frankly IMO it is a masterpiece of epic cinema on a grand "Laurence of Arabia" scale, deserving of whatever hollywood awards it may receive. Incredible score, great cast and very cool effects.

Those worried about it being a two part story have to accept that Frank Herbert's vision of the "Duniverse" is far too complex to be just one movie - (hence the box office failure of the 1984 version).

Fortunately we will see Pt2 in Oct 2023, and quite likely a third movie to follow based on the second book of the series.

Fun fact: George Lucas "borrowed" 41 ideas from Dune for Star Wars...
Producers just do not appreciate the works of the writers. Just look at the back story to LOTR and the pressure put on Peter Jackson to condense a book trilogy into a single movie which in turn turned into a two movie idea. Thankfully Miramax allowed Jackson shop LOTR to other studios and New Line Cinema took on the project, and even suggested to Jackson that he turn his two-movie project into a trilogy. Oh the Irony.

Getting back to Dune I am surprised that they did not film this back to back and this runs the risk of the story being disjointed. I am a huge fan of Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Blackhawk Down) but he completely stuffed the Prometheus story with that garbage Alien Covenant.

The only issue I have with this latest release of Dune is that I think I might have to go and read the book.
