Thank you all for your posts. The object was roughly 20 degrees above the horizon when we first noticed it and it took roughly 1 to 2 minutes to traverse over the sky to the point where it suddenly stopped. After its changes of directions which took roughly 20 seconds, it then took another 20 seconds to then go out of sight.
During the time we watched the object we saw an airliner coming into Brisbane from the north west and it appeared to be much lower than the object, and traveling slower than the object.
The light on the object was quite noticeable and did not go on and off during the time we watched it cross the sky. Our first thought was also a drone and perhaps that was what it was but why would it go right across the sky and then disappear over the horizon to the south east when it had come from the north west??
Anyway, perhaps it was the Chinese checking us all out!!
Thank you all again.
