no they weren't put down, the public outcry forced the council to backpedal and come up with an alternative, I can't remember how much was raised but it was a serious amount of money, I think around $80,000, shows the nicer side of humanity I guess. These monkeys (or their descendants) were around in the city park when I was a kid (40+years ago)
