This is a nice guide to get you started. I believe this chap gets most of his images using lucky imaging, if you want to see what its capable of. You really want one of those nice new low noise cameras from ZWO and QHY to get the most out of it. I think my 1600mm has a better signal to noise ratio at around 30s rather than 5 or 10. Could make the difference on those really faint fuzzies.
