I just installed the Presonus Studio One Prime (Free ver) on one of my PC's and its seems pretty good. There is no limit on number of tracks, no limit on memory. Can only use its effects which are pretty good, no VST etc.
So for what you need to do, it looks good. Time will tell if it does not have a feature you need but it's got a lot for a freeby. Besides I use its bigger brother and it really is great software.
Tip: Once you have added a few tracks, click on the 'View' Menu, then select Console. That way you get a track view and wave view. The track view is very handy for dragging effects onto and setting the channel audio inputs as well as the master audio output.
As with all DAW's, each one is different and take a little while to get used to, but this seems to be more intuitive and easy to pickup. There are heaps of great tutorials available too.
There is also plenty of addins to download for it too, free. Over 1 GB..
