Hi Mike,

The Big Island of Hawaii is hard to beat in that regard.
You can drive from your beach house to 9000' in under an hour on
a high-speed road that has one of the quickest ascents anywhere in the
world.

Starting at the floor of the Pacific, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain
in the world from base to peak at more than 33,500 feet.
By comparison Everest is 29,029 above mean sea level.

The laminar flow of air across the volcano plus being surrounded
by tens of millions of square km's of ocean provide superb seeing.

The island's street lighting is designed to minimise light pollution.
They employ a minimal number of LED lights with blue filters
that emit a narrow-band yellow-green hue. Even in suburban streets,
the views of the night skies would make most other city dwelling
astronomers around the world envious.
