Japanese Macaque (snow) monkeys from the Launceston monkey Island. Many of the monkeys carry the Herpes B virus, which is relatively harmless to them but can be fatal to humans. Some years ago, the Launceston City Council, which owns the colony, decided to have the monkeys put down. The public were enraged at the councils proposal to put down the monkeys so the council launched a fund raising appeal to build a new safer enclosure for these animals and they were saved are still with us today.
